Varzuga is an interesting Russian North
Varzuga is one of the oldest settlements on the Kola Peninsula. The first mention of it dates back to the fifteenth century, when Varzuga was a large settlement on the Tersk coast. This is the only settlement that is not located on the seashore. Before the emergence of Murmansk, Varzuga, along with Cola, claimed to be the capital of the peninsula. And today it is very different from the surrounding villages. The main attraction of Varzuga is the ancient churches built of wood (Assumption Church, dating back to 1674, bell tower and chapel). Despite the small selection of interesting places to visit, it is definitely worth coming here. You will get a rare opportunity to look at the life of the people of the Kola North. Varzuga is not an abandoned village like many others. There is an observation deck with an equipped lift and a view of the village and the river. The village of Varzuga is one of the few tourist centers in the Murmansk region. Tourists from Russia and beyond come here. In 2017, a hotel opened here, and local residents also rent out their homes.
The village is divided into two parts by the river of the same name. In the western part there is a collective farm, which still bears the name "Sunrises of Communism". Previously, the main activity of the collective farm was the extraction and processing of fish, currently the development of fishing tourism has begun. There is a church, a shop and an occasional restaurant in the western part of the village.
The eastern part (Nikolskaya side) is the old village. Tourists rarely come here. You can get here by motorboat almost around the clock. In this part of the village, the houses are smaller and older, but they don't look like ruins. There are sand hills just above the river. The area there is completely deserted, there are no settlements. Wild, untouched nature is what attracts most tourists to these parts.
Fishing enthusiasts have long known the route to the village of Varzuga. Salmon, trout, grayling and pike can be caught in the local river. Fish can be caught from May to July and from September to October. Fishing is allowed only on fishing permits and only in certain places. Despite this, there are plenty of fish for everyone.
When visiting Varzug, you can also visit the village of Kuzomen and try to find amethysts in the area of Cape Ship.
The easiest way to get to Varzuga is by car. The road is unpaved, it's better to take an SUV. You can take a bus in Kandalaksha and transfer to Umba.
